Manchester United’s defensive midfield position is in serious need of investment, which is quite an astonishing statement given the fact that the current options in that area cost a combined £121m.
A long-term answer is required
Ander Herrera was signed for £29m. Nemanja Matic was signed for £40m. Fred was signed for £52m – not one of them has made a significant indent in the first team in the defensive midfield position, which makes for some tough reading for United fans.
It has become a bit of a common tagline throughout Paul Pogba’s second coming at Old Trafford that he is in need of a pragmatic midfielder alongside him who can ‘unlock’ his skills, and for all the mocking that ensued, the Frenchman hasn’t really had that help other than in short spells.
Herrera has made 169 appearances for the club since signing from Athletic Bilbao, but has fallen out of favour with Jose Mourinho given the fact he has made just two league starts this season.
Matic impressed in his first season in Manchester after arriving from Chelsea, but the 30-year-old has been a shadow of himself in the current campaign and has perhaps been one of the club’s worst performers, if not the worst – one man who can solve the Red Devils’ problems, however, is another Serbian midfielder.
Break the bank for his services

The 23-year-old Serbia international combines a unique blend of dominating physique, excellent technique and close control to great effect, making him arguably an all-round midfield powerhouse.
Lazio’s star man scored 14 goals and made seven more for his teammates last season, prompting the Serie A club to slap a price tag in the region of £110m on his head, as reported by calciomercato.com.
There is still plenty of margin for improvement in the former Genk man’s game, and if United were to cough up the asking price, they would have a solution to their midfield problems for perhaps the next decade.
