Southampton’s poor start to the Premier League season continued before the international break as they surrendered a one-goal lead to draw 1-1 with Watford at St Mary’s, and Cedric Soares once again flattered to deceive at right-back before deflecting Jose Holebas’ equaliser past Alex McCarthy.
Taking a single point against the Hornets left the south coast outfit outside of the relegation zone on goal difference and with just one win in 12 top-flight matches this term, ahead of a crucial fixture against bottom club Fulham on Saturday.
A number of their first-team regulars have not performed to the best of their ability and one of those is Portugal international Soares, who has struggled to make a positive impact at either end of the pitch ever since his country triumphed at Euro 2016.
The 27-year-old has had little competition for his spot in the starting XI over the course of the previous couple of years, and that has perhaps led him to be complacent knowing that he is unlikely to get dropped however badly he might play.

While Jack Stephens and James Ward-Prowse are among the names who could potentially fill in there, never-before-seen youngster Yan Valery has also impressed for the U23 side and should soon be pushing for his first-team debut.
