According to reports in the Daily Star on Sunday, Manchester United will have to pay £45m if they want to sign Tottenham Hotspur left-back Danny Rose during the January transfer window.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Daily Star on Sunday says that Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is ready to sanction the sale of the 27-year-old after Kyle Walker joined Manchester City during the summer, but he wants at least £45m for the England international.
The Daily Star on Sunday says that Pochettino only wants players that he feels are totally committed to the club, and the Argentine boss doesn’t feel that is the case after Rose spoke out in an exclusive interview with The Sun in August.
The report adds that while Manchester United chief Jose Mourinho is a long-term admirer of the Doncaster-born player, he could face competition for his signature from Manchester City and Everton with the Three Lions man keen to move back up north.
How has Rose done on his return from injury?
He certainly hasn’t been first-choice, probably unsurprisingly given his comments during the summer and the fact that he was out of action since January.
The 27-year-old started the win against Crystal Palace last month, but he has only started once in Tottenham’s next four Premier League matches as was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
Pochettino may certainly feel that now is the best time to get a good price for Rose by selling him, but it must be an acceptable fee.
Will United offer £45m in January?
It’s difficult to say.
Considering Ashley Young is currently the first-choice left wing-back Mourinho may feel that it is a position that needs to be prioritised, and Rose would certainly be near the top of his list for the role.
However, Young has been performing so well – including a brace against Watford in midweek – that the Portuguese boss may feel he can wait until next summer to strengthen, although that could depend on what the aims are for the second-half of the campaign and how well placed they are in the Premier League during the January transfer window.
