James Milner has urged Liverpool to prove their title credentials in the coming weeks after going through a “blip”.
The Reds lost to Manchester City in the Premier League, their first defeat in the top-flight this term, and were then knocked out of the FA Cup by Wolves.
What’s the word?
Milner and his team-mates have yet to win in 2019, but a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion offers a perfect opportunity for Jurgen Klopp’s men to get back to winning ways.
The Reds are four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, and Milner has urged his team-mates to refocus and bounce back as they look to overcome a “blip”.
“We have to make sure we bounce back and look at where we can get better,” he told Liverpool’s official website.
“You’re never going to go a full season without having blips. I think at the start of this season we weren’t playing our best but we were getting results.
“[It’s] back-to-back defeats now, which really isn’t good enough for us, but you have blips in a season. It’s about how you respond.
“I think you’ve seen the character in the squad in the last few years, and the players we have, to know we will bounce back.
“We have to show that, though. It’s easy saying it in an interview, we have to do it on the pitch at the weekend.
“The games keep coming thick and fast and hopefully we can get a few of the injured lads back as well.”
Perfect opportunity to get back on track
Liverpool enjoyed a phenomenal calendar year in 2018, and a super start to the season.
Their first defeat came against their biggest title rivals, losing in a pulsating clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Of course, it can be argued that their FA Cup exit came at a perfect time, allowing them to focus their attentions on the Premier League.
And a soft run of games before their encounter with Bayern Munich in the Champions League – they face Brighton, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, West Ham and Bournemouth – offers the Reds a perfect opportunity to potentially stretch their lead at the top of the table.
City, by comparison, face games against Arsenal and Chelsea in the same time period. Milner’s quotes, then, should serve as the perfect reminder of the Reds’ golden chance to win the Premier League title.
FFC’s James Jones has identified the one thing that could cost Liverpool the title. Find out what it is in the video below…
