And breath!Another transfer deadline day is over and although there wasn’t really an extremely late scramble from any club in particular, it was still an actioned packed day of surprises, ridiculous transfer fees and your usual inactivity from Arsenal.Overall we saw 16 deals involving Premier League clubs today, with a total of roughly £80million, which took the summer’s Premier League spending to a record £862m.Some clubs did better than others over the course of the day, while some lucky clubs were able to sit back and enjoy the action after doing all their business well before the deadline. But where’s the fun of that?So we’ve taken a cheeky look at who we think are the day’s winners and losers in the Premier League. From overwhelming transfer fees, to underwhelming additions, to gung-ho tactics to get deals over the line.Here’s who we think won the day and who we need think need to hand their heads in shame.Yep we’re looking at you, Arsene…

Winner – West Ham

Slaven Bilic knew what he had to do in order to strengthen his side before the window closed.

The Hammers were extremely impressive in their away victories over Arsenal and Liverpool recently, but their home losses to Leicester and Bournemouth in between were largely blamed on a lack of width in Bilic’s side.

So the Croat went out and loaned Victor Moses from Chelsea and signed one of the Championships best players of last season in Michail Antonio from Nottingham Forest for around £7m.

He also nabbed Alex Song on loan from Barcelona to add some class to his midfield and then added Nikica Jelavic to his strike force for a mere £3m.

As transfer windows go, that’s pretty impressive. None were impulse buys. They were all thought out and address the problems the Hammers had in the squad.

Take a bow, Hammers.

Loser – Arsenal

Obviously.

Everyone knows Arsenal are in desperate need of a world class striker to boost their already dwindling title ambitions.

But instead of going out to get one – they’ve had all summer to do so – Wenger instead went to Paris to take part in French media duties.

Arsenal fans are livid, as you’d expect, because they’ve now got to last until January in the hope top scorer Own Goal stays in form for them.

Otherwise they’ll be in real trouble.

Winner – Southampton

Southampton started today worried they’ll end it without midfielder Victor Wanyama at the club

Instead, they managed to bring in highly-rated Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk from Celtic for £11.5m and, somewhat surprisingly, are still blessed with Wanyama’s services.

van Dijk was linked with a move to a top four club only last January, and so the fact the Saints have managed to tempt him to St. Mary’s without European football can be considered a mini-coup.

It’s a typical case of knowing what you need in order to get stronger, going out and getting it and then making sure you keep hold of your prized assets at the same time.

Southampton have strengthened this summer and will no doubt enjoy similar success this season as they did last.

Loser – Tottenham

Somehow Spurs have ended the window WITHOUT Saido Berahino at the club, despite the West Brom striker venting his anger and frustration at not being allowed to leave the club.

This one had been running all summer and it was widely believed Spurs would eventually get their man, but instead all it’s done is cause a fall out between the player and West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace.

Peace insists Spurs’ offers for Berahino were well below their valuation of the player and claim the bids came in too late to allow them to source a decent replacement.

Either way, the blame has to lie with Spurs, who should’ve tried to get their man earlier in the window. Instead they’ve left themselves with all their eggs in a big Harry Kane shaped basket.

Doh!

Undecided – Man United

Anyone who plays Football Manager will know how good Anthony Martial turns out to be on the game.

But in real life? You just can’t be sure.

Nevertheless, Man United believe he’s good enough to warrant a £36m fee, which makes him the world’s most expensive teenage footballer ever.

He’s unproven in the Premier League, is only 19-years-old and now has the pressure of living up to the famous number 9 shirt at Old Trafford. Talk about a huge risk.

That said, reports suggest one of the add-ons involved in the deal with Monaco include an extra fee if he were to go on and win the Ballon d’Or whilst still a United player. So the club must have extremely high hopes for him.

The next Ronaldo at Old Trafford? Or the next Diego Forlan? This one could go either way.

Oh and the David De Gea saga? What a complete and utter shambles…

Loser – Chelsea

Chelsea have gone from trying to sign John Stones to instead signing Reading’s Michael Hector.

What on earth is that all about? As underwhelming transfers go, this has to be up there with the biggest.

Jose Mourinho also went out and bought Papy Djilobodji from Nantes, which is another weird one, and the whole thing stinks of panic buying from the Blues after they conceded nine goals in their opening four games of the new season.

Wouldn’t it have been better to just not sign anyone and keep the faith in a bunch of defenders who did indeed help you win the Premier League last season?

Either way, Chelsea are definitely one of the losers of this deadline day.
